New Feature: Email Invites

Help your friends and colleagues find and claim their open source contributions. If you’re a registered Ohloh user and contributor to an open source project, we want your help. You probably have friends who also contributed to open source but haven’t claimed their contribution yet. If so, please invite them to join Ohloh. To make this easy for you, we’ve added a button on their contributor page which will send them an email with a link to click that’ll bring them to a page to create an account on Ohloh and then navigate them directly to the contribution you think is theirs.

As always, Ohloh will protect their email and yours. So the invite will come from us and does not divulge your email. We will link to your profile page in the mail, however.

The focus of this feature is to get more contributors to sign up. In the future, we may extend it to send invites to friends who aren’t contributors but would benefit from all the other value Ohloh brings to people in the open source world, like the project reports, project suggestions, similar users, and information links for project.

Please invite just people you know or with whom you’ve worked.

Thanks and of course, I’d love feedback on the feature.

Andy

PS Here’s a work-flow:

  1. Goto a project page, e.g. FireFox

  2. Click on Contributors in the top right.

  3. Click on a contributor you know, e.g. bzbarsky

  4. Click on the button that says, I know this person. Again, only if you know them please.

  5. Should be easy to use from here.

Hey all, wondering what people thought about the invite feature.

    • Was the announcement visible?
    • Can you find the feature?
    • Are all your compatriots already using Ohloh?

    Thanks in advance,
    Andy

    Cool feature

Not much help on the questions, sorry.

I’ve got to be honest with you, I didn’t find this announcement until I entered the main page. I have my bookmarks set to recent posts and such – I basically miss the announcements. That is not your fault though :) However, I do check the ‘Blog’ and ‘News’ pages pretty often. The Blog sometimes has entry’s in there which are also made as announcements.

Sure I can find the feature, and it is placed well.

Mines are. I have actually been looking for other guys I knew the email from and see if they are on Ohloh yet.

I did not find the announcement at all, although I usually enter via the main page. The problem is that 2/3 of the main page are used by the ad-like explanation of ohloh.
My suggestion: Remove that explanation (or shrink it) for people who repeatedly visit the site. I.e. if I’m logged in and have visited ohloh ten times, you might replace that big thingy by a plain link (leading me to the full explanation again), so I can instead concentrate on new projects, recent posts and other items currently buried under the explanation.

Bananaweizen: Good point regarding the giant ad-like section on the main page.

We’re thinking of moving it to a “learn more about ohloh” page and instead make the front page more news-ish (new projects, contributors, articles, annoucements).
