Google Ads on Ohloh

We’re running an experiment to see how much money Google ads would generate for Ohloh. We’ll run them for a week or two and then decide whether to continue. This is a somewhat touchy issue – help us get it right. Leave us feedback on how you feel about it.

I would try Project Wonderful out too – a bit nicer than google ads and reputedly earns you more too.

    thanks cirg,

From inspecting their current set of customers, I get the impression that they are very comic-book oriented.

Do you happen to know if they have much technology-related sites (and, by extension, advertisers?).

I find it somewhat amusing that when you look at a project (Livepage was the one that I noticed it on) the google ads give you adverts for similar types of service/product heh

So far the ads seem very unintrusive. As far as I’m concerned, without destroying the design or “overdoing it”, if it helps you all keep this service alive, go for it! You might be able to fit some “nicely” down the right side of the forum screens. And on the programming language statistics pages there’s a big block with nothing in it. I generally think google ads do a good job of providing context sensitive ad choices so in general they’re almost kinda handy to have there.

I like Google ads. They are small, text-based (I hope that’s the ones you use), not bandwidth intensive and sometimes, surprisingly, useful!

    I hope they do well.

What happened to the ads? Disappeared?

Personally I would have nothing against ads, in fact, I support such a move since this kind of site is perfect for something like Google Ads.

Expect a major annoucement on this topic very soon.

The bottom line was that Google ads didn’t pay very well and were difficult to control the contents of. For example, we’d often find keyword misunderstanding. This would result in train-related ads on the Ruby on Rails page, etc…

We’ve decided to try something much more ambitious, but you’ll have to wait until we launch…

I have adblock plus for firefox so I can’t see the ads :)
