Project Management Insights: An Interview with Red Hat’s Dan Allen

EclipseCon 2012: Ohloh’s Rich Sands interviews Dan Allen of Red Hat about the Arquillian project. Dan uses Ohloh, along with other analytics tools, to help him better understand his community, attract new contributors, and gauge the success of outreach efforts including event attendance and hackathons. Learn some of the tricks of the trade in using Ohloh to help manage a FOSS project from an experienced and sophisticated project manager.

Many thanks to Dan for this interview, and my apologies for how long it took me to get this edited and posted. And huge thanks goes to our impromptu camera man, Mark Atwood of Red Hat!

Thanks again Rich. Great job producing the video! The overlays you added into the video showing the project information in ohloh and on the Arquillian website played extremely well with the content of the interview. If I were a newcomer, I’d definitely find this video very helpful in understanding what ohloh has to offer. In true ohloh style, we’ll let the metric be the judge of that :)

Dan, thanks again for your time, and patience in waiting for this to get posted. You’re right, sometimes newcomers to Ohloh need some context for how the site’s metrics can help. Your experience and clear explanation of how you’re using them makes the point very well!

We’ve learned a bit here about video editing in the process – probably stuff that most video bloggers have mastered in the first 15 minutes, but hopefully the learnings will stick. And I’ve acquired a directional mic and one of those bendy-legged mini tripods for next time. But of course, nothing can compare to the ace camerawork of @fallenpegasus. Holding an iPhone steady for 10 minutes straight is not as easy as it might seem! Thanks again, Mark!
